How to get flowers in an Amaryllis
It is typically planted from October - November to February. The Amaryllis Hippeastrum bulb is planted in soil in a pot, with the bulb only slightly in the soil, remember to only water a little at first. It is not necessary to plant the bulb in soil, you can also take a tall, slender glass (preferably 30-40 cm high) and put 3-10 cm of leca nuts in the bottom and place the Amaryllis bulb on top. The tall glass will thus support the flower stems.
The amaryllis bulb contains a lot of water, so it is also possible to dip the bulb in melted wax - not too hot - and then fix the bulb with a small steel wire stand so that it does not fall over. This way, the bulb can also be included in a Christmas decoration. When the bulb is planted in November, it will bloom before Christmas.
How to care for amaryllis
A small Amaryllis bulb of 20+ typically produces 1 stem with flower, whereas a large bulb of 28+ and above produces several stems with flowers.
When the bulb has finished flowering, there are several options, either throw the bulb away or leave it in the pot and fertilize it regularly during the growing season. This gives the long leaves the opportunity to send nutrients down to the bulb. Alternatively, you can plant the bulb in the ground in the garden, but remember to dig it up before frost comes.
Only in the fall can the leaves be cut off, the bulb removed from the pot and kept in a dark and cool place until you want to plant your Hippeastrum bulb again.
