Quince and Cydonia – botanical characteristics

Quince (Cydonia) is closely related to apple and pear trees, but is distinguished by its characteristic shape and fragrance. The tree develops a round or slightly bottle-shaped fruit with yellow skin and a strong aroma. The leaves are large and oval, and flowering occurs in spring with a dense cluster of pink or white flowers.
Quince can be grown as a freestanding tree, as a trellis, or in groups for a decorative garden environment.

The difference between apple quince and pear quince

There are two different types of quince, which can resemble both apples and pears:

  • Apple quince: Has a rounder shape, more compact flesh and often a distinct sweetness after cooking.

  • Pear quince: Has an elongated shape, firmer and juicier texture and is often used for jelly and pickling.

Both types can be used for food, jelly, etc., as they are very similar to each other, so the choice of variety depends more on the desired aesthetic expression in the garden, as fruit shape and flower color vary between varieties.
