Why choose bulbs and scallions?
Onions and chives are among the most popular crops in the kitchen garden because they are easy to grow and produce high yields, even in small areas. With onions, you skip the early, sensitive stages and go straight to establishing a strong plant that quickly takes root and grows.
Onions grown from bulbs often grow larger, more uniform and ripen earlier in the season, which is an advantage in the Danish climate.
How to plant onions – step by step
Planting onions is simple, but a few basic rules make the difference between a good and an excellent result.

Plant the bulbs in loose, well-drained soil.

Place them with the tip facing up, about 2–3 cm below the soil surface.

Ensure a planting distance of 5–10 cm so that the bulbs can develop optimally.

Water lightly after planting – onions thrive best in evenly moist soil, but cannot tolerate being too wet.
Different types of onions for the garden
There are many varieties of onions, and each type has its own strength. Zitauer onions are known for producing large bulbs with high storage capacity, while red onions are popular for their beautiful color and strong flavor. Shallots produce many small bulbs that are more aromatic and flavorful, they are often used in French cuisine.
