How to grow pumpkins
Pumpkin seeds are sown on the windowsill in March-April. Not too early, otherwise the plants will become too lanky before they can be planted out. It is also possible to plant them in the greenhouse, as a staging post in slightly larger pots.
In May, the pumpkin plants are placed outdoors, where they grow better in the summer than in the greenhouse. They are healthy, greedy plants that appreciate lots of compost and fertilizer.
Tips for successful pumpkin growing
Ensure good spacing between the plants and avoid shade and competition from other plants.
Remove weeds around the plants, especially in the initial phase.
Remember to give them fertilizer during the growing period, a pumpkin that grows a lot also needs something to live on.
Protect the fruits from direct soil contact with straw or non-woven fabric to avoid rot.
Never plant decorative pumpkins near your edible pumpkins. Cross-pollination can make some of the fruits bitter.
