Basil – a versatile herb for the garden

Basil thrives in the garden, raised beds and pots, and its green, fragrant leaves make it an indispensable addition to the kitchen garden. The seeds are easy to sow, and the plant grows quickly under the right conditions.

How to grow basil from seeds

When growing basil from seed, sow the seeds in light, moist soil indoors or in a greenhouse. Keep the soil evenly moist and place the seeds in bright light, but out of direct sun.

When the sprouts are strong enough, they can be pricked out and planted out in pots, raised beds or directly in the garden when the risk of frost is over. Basil can also be sown directly in pots.

Basil seeds require a lot of heat, so they grow best in a greenhouse, windowsill, or covered with glass or plastic in a misting bed. When summer comes, they can easily grow outside.
Basil is best sown several times, so you get more out of the seeds and a longer harvest period. Once summer comes, they grow strongly and you can harvest a lot from the basil plants. When you cut basil, you also prevent them from going into flower.
