Peonies – elegant and colorful

Peonies are classic garden favorites with large, full flowers. Some have fragrance, others almost none. They come in many colors, from soft pink to deep red and white, and are perfect for both sunny and semi-shaded areas of the garden. Peonies often bloom for several weeks if the weather permits. Flowering is around May, with some varieties blooming into June, if the weather is not too hot.

How to plant and care for peonies

When planting peonies, the most important thing is the planting depth. The top of the tuber should be about 3cm below the soil surface. So each plant should be checked when planting. If they are planted too deep, they will not bloom for many years. With the right care – water, fertilizer and minimal pruning – peonies can thrive and bloom beautifully year after year.

Peonies love a soil with a higher pH value, if you don't have clay soil you should lime the soil around the peonies once in a while. This could be when you lime the lawn anyway.

Tips for using peonies in the garden

Peonies are versatile and can be used as single plants, in groups or as part of flower beds. They are also perfect as cut flowers for indoor bouquets, where they spread both color and fragrance. Combine peonies with other perennials and summer flowers to create a lush and harmonious flower bed.
