Blackcurrant bush – location and growing conditions
A blackcurrant bush thrives best in a sunny to slightly shaded location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Good light supports both flowering and the development of large, flavorful blackcurrants. The soil should be kept evenly moist, especially during the growing season and during fruiting.
Blackcurrant bushes are hardy and adapt to many soil types, but soil with good structure and added organic matter provides the best growing conditions and a more uniform yield.
Care and pruning of blackcurrants
Blackcurrants set berries on older branches but do not continue to do so, making proper pruning important to maintain a productive blackcurrant bush. The oldest branches are removed regularly to make room for new shoots, these shoots will bear blackcurrants later and ensure stable berry production over time.
Regular fertilization in the spring supports growth and contributes to the development of strong branches and well-shaped berries. At the same time, the bush should be kept free of weeds around the root zone so that water and nutrients are optimally utilized.
