Sunflower – a decorative and nutritious plant
Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) are known for their large, distinctive flower heads that follow the sun throughout the day. In French, they are called Tournesol, which loosely translates to "turning after the sun."
They attract both pollinators and birds, and the flowers can be used as cut flowers or for seed production.
Growing and caring for sunflowers from seeds
Sunflower seeds can be sown directly outdoors once night frost has passed, typically from April to June. Place the seeds in sunny conditions with well-drained soil. Keep the soil moist during germination, and thin out to allow the plants to develop tall, healthy stems and large flower heads. With regular watering and fertilization, maximum flower and seed production is achieved.
