Lettuce seeds can be sown directly in the growing area. You can also start them in pots or trays indoors. Pick lettuce is the one that yields the fastest. Head lettuce takes a little longer before it can be harvested. Batavia lettuce, Escarolle lettuce and Chicory lettuce are late lettuces that should not be sown until after July 1st, otherwise they will go to seed instead of forming heads. These are really good lettuces that can be sown after the potatoes have been dug up.
